Lead With the Story, Not the Standard

Weak narratives open by restating the Magnet® source of evidence. Strong ones open with what actually happened: a problem, a nurse-led decision, a measurable result. Appraisers already know the standard — they want to see it in action.

Use the SOE Structure, But Don't Let It Sound Like a Template

Every narrative should follow the required Source of Evidence structure, but that doesn't mean every unit's narrative should read identically. Appraisers can tell when a narrative was copy-pasted and lightly edited across departments. Let each unit's voice and specifics come through.

Show the "Why," Not Just the "What"

Listing an outcome ("falls decreased by 20%") is a start, but appraisers want to understand the nursing judgment behind it. What did staff notice? What did they decide to change, and why? That reasoning is what demonstrates professional practice, not just a number on a chart.

Keep Data and Narrative Aligned

A narrative that describes one story while the data shows another is one of the fastest ways to lose credibility. Before submission, cross-check every claim in the writing against the actual data being submitted.

Edit for the Reader, Not the Writer

Clinical teams often write narratives the way they'd write a chart note — dense, abbreviated, assuming shared context. Appraisers don't have that context. A good editing pass asks: would someone outside this unit understand exactly what happened and why it mattered?
